The AIME team plays a leading role in coordinating international collaborative efforts for the annotation and analysis of the genomes of methylotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria, using the Microscope platform at Genoscope, Evry, France. Slightly over five years ago and as described in this review, Stéphane Vuilleumier identified a ribosomally encoded gene for the precursor peptide for methanobactin, a copper-binding molecule which plays a key role in methane oxidation by some methanotrophic bacteria, in the genome sequence of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. As shown in subsequent bioinformatic analyses, homologs of this short DNA-encoded peptide derivative are found in the genomes of bacteria reaching far beyond methanobactin-producing bacteria.
